Ohakpu Primary School serves 195 pupils and is a part of the autonomous community of Ohakpu in the Oru West region of Imo State in the south east of Nigeria.
Founded in 1939, Ohakpu Primary School comprises five classroom bungalows, a library and administration buildings. Ohakpu Primary School’s 8 teaching staff work hard to teach a range of subjects from science and agriculture, to health and mathematics.
The primary school faces a range of challenges, from water, electricity and dilapidated buildings to a lack of everyday classroom resources and basic security provisions.
Our goals for Ohakpu Primary School
Improving the learning environment
The schools we support often lack basic facilities like toilets and running water, so a big part of our initiative is to improve the infrastructure of schools. Making school buildings safe and weather proof, improving interior spaces so that they’re comfortable and stimulating for both staff and children. We also work to regenerate outdoor spaces like playing fields and assembly grounds to improve learning, exercise and play.
Providing classroom resources and technology
Rural schools suffer from a desperate lack of books and other classroom resources, the essential tools that help children learn. Textbooks are often outdated or not available. Access to technology is also extremely important and is far removed from the experiences of too many children. By providing IT resources we can broaden children’s horizons and help them explore the world.
Supporting teachers and staff
We seek to provide support to teachers to be able to provide quality education through teaching aids like audio, video, books and other technologies. Providing teachers with on-going training in the core knowledge and familiarity with proven teaching practices is equally important, as well as better welfare and safety for teachers.
